7 DAYS SOUTH AFRICA: SEA AND ROCKS REVERIE

7 days of coastal charm and ancient soul.

Dune-swept shores and salt-sprayed lunches await in Langebaan. Here you can not only explore the wild beauty of West Coast National Park, but also visit the crayfish valhalla and set sail on a whale cruise from postcard-pretty Paternoster, should you have a thing for the maritime.

In the Cederberg Mountains you can swap sea for stone: listen to San rock art whispering stories from 10,000 years ago, and taste bold vintages from the highest vineyards in South Africa at Cederberg Private Cellar – absolute musts if you love history and wine.

Craving cosiness after these little adventures? Then head to Tulbagh, stroll the heritage-filled Church Street and sip your way through the valley’s finest.

And finally, Cape Town wraps it all in glamour—with sweeping views from Table Mountain and a sunset champagne cruise in Cape Town’s glamorous V&A Waterfront you can put the cherry on your South African cake.

Untamed. Unexpected. Unforgettable.

Explore all of this by yourself during an unforgettable road trip. If you want to learn more about this country during your trip, our guides will be happy to drive and show you around at extra cost.

Day 2

Drive to Paternoster via West Coast National Park

Kick off your Western Cape road trip with a scenic drive north to Paternoster, a charming fishing village known for its stunning beaches, whitewashed fishermen’s houses and fresh seafood. On the way to Paternoster, stop after 100 kilometres at the West Coast National Park – famous for its abundant birdlife, indigenous fynbos and spring wildflowers. From November to March, a whale-watching cruise would be a great add-on to your visit, and guided bird tours run year-round, check the extra activities. Treat yourself to a 7-course beachfront lunch at Die Strandloper in Langebaan afterwards, and then it’s just another 40 minutes’ drive to laid-back Paternoster – welcome to the West Coast!

Day 3

Drive from Paternoster to the Cederberg Mountains

Make the most of your final morning in Paternoster – take a long beach walk, soak up the sun, go horse-riding, or sip a barista special down at the Crayfish Wharf. If you’re up for one last coastal indulgence, check out our lunch suggestions; some of Paternoster’s restaurants rank among the world’s best, so booking well ahead is highly recommended. After lunch, it’s time to head inland for a scenic 2-hour drive from sandy shores to the rugged peaks of the dramatic Cederberg Mountains. You’ll have enough time to settle, enjoy a sundowner, and get ready for a full day of Cederberg tomorrow!

Day 4

Cederberg Mountains

The Cederberg Mountains are famed for their dramatic beauty, with towering sandstone cliffs shaped over millennia and ancient rock art left behind by the San and Khoi people. This wild, rugged region is a natural and cultural treasure trove. Step into a time capsule and go explore the Stadsaal Caves, where San rock art tells silent stories from thousands of years ago. Or hike to the Rietrivier canyon viewpoint for jaw-dropping panoramas, or head to South Africa’s highest vineyards for a well-earned wine tasting. For a family-friendly detour, you can go to Cederberg Park Kromrivier, where kids can join in farm fun while grown-ups enjoy a cold craft beer. Golden-hued tip of the day: Wrap it all up with a sundowner hike – because everything is better with a view from the top!

Day 5

Drive from Cederberg Mountains to Tulbagh

After a final breakfast in the majestic Cederberg Mountains, it’s time to pack up and head for new heights—this time, the picturesque peaks of the Witzenberg Mountain Valley, where the charming Cape Dutch town of Tulbagh is waiting to be explored. To get there, you’ll travel south via a scenic mix of gravel and tar roads. The most straightforward route leads along the R303 towards Ceres, before continuing on the R46 through the fruit-growing heartland of Ceres and the quaint town of Wolseley. The total distance is about 125 kilometres and the drive should take around two hours.

Day 6

Drive from Tulbagh to Cape Town

The drive from Tulbagh to Cape Town takes just over 1.5 hours (121 km) via the scenic R44 and N1 highways. Once you arrive, settle in for your final two nights and treat yourself to a first-class dinner – you’ve earned it. With one full day left, make the most of it with iconic activities like a ride up Table Mountain or a champagne sunset cruise from the V&A Waterfront. Cape Town is the perfect finale to your journey, full of flavour, views, and unforgettable moments. And who knows… this might just be the end of your first Southern Africa itinerary, and the beginning of the second!
