When to visit Uganda?

Many travellers wonder when the ideal time is to visit Uganda. The simple answer: anytime! With its consistently pleasant temperatures, Uganda is a destination you can explore throughout the year. Of course, certain seasons are more suitable for specific activities, so the perfect time to go really depends on your interests.

Touristic seasons in Uganda

Uganda has three different holiday seasons, mostly related to peak holiday seasons and rainy seasons.

High season

Uganda’s peak travel season falls between July and September (summer holidays) and from December 20th through late January (the Christmas holiday period). As expected, prices for accommodation, activities, and other travel services are higher during these times.

Low season

The low season coincides with the rainy months, as fewer travellers prefer visiting during periods of frequent showers. This typically includes March, April, May, and November through December 19th. The advantage is that prices are more affordable, and if a bit of rain doesn’t bother you, it can be an ideal time for your trip.

Mid-season

The mid-season is all months not mentioned above, basically the rest of the year.

Two rainy seasons, two dry seasons

Generally, most areas experience two main rainy seasons: from March to the end of May and from September to December, with the peak rainfall usually occurring in April and October. The dry periods typically fall between June and August, and again from December to February. However, since Uganda has a tropical climate, occasional showers can occur even during these drier months. Surprisingly, these light rains can be quite refreshing and enjoyable! Ultimately, there’s no single “best time” to visit Uganda—it really depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for.

When to visit Uganda

Safaris

In Uganda, wildlife can be seen throughout the year, but the dry season makes spotting animals particularly easy. With short, parched grass, animals gather around lakes, rivers, and waterholes to drink under the hot sun, offering excellent viewing opportunities. Additionally, dry roads make traveling through the parks more convenient.

The rainy season offers a different, equally captivating experience. Lush greenery and blooming flowers create a stunning backdrop as herbivores graze peacefully—perfect for photography. The combination of rain and sunshine often produces rainbows, adding a magical touch to your safari. It’s also a prime time for wildlife enthusiasts who enjoy seeing newborn animals, as many species give birth during these months. Birdwatchers will delight too, as migratory birds flock to Uganda to nest, making it a paradise for avian life.

Gorilla and Chimpanzee Trekking

If you’re planning to hike and see Uganda’s majestic mountain gorillas or playful chimpanzees in their natural habitat, the best time to visit is during the dry season. Trails are less muddy, making it easier to reach the animals. Keep in mind that these wildlife experiences are very popular and require a permit, so it’s important to organise your trip well in advance if you want to include this on your itinerary.

Boat safaris and rafting

Boat safaris are a popular attraction in Uganda and can usually be enjoyed year-round, such as on Lake Mburo. However, on the Nile River, boat safaris can be more challenging during the rainy season, as heavy rainfall can raise water levels and make navigation difficult. Wildlife sightings along the riverbanks may also be less frequent since animals have easier access to water. The same considerations apply to activities like white-water rafting or Nile cruises. Therefore, if you plan to include these experiences in your Uganda itinerary, travelling during the dry seasons is the best option.
