9 Days Uganda : visiting gorillas & chimpanzees

Watching our closest relatives in their natural habitat is a dream that becomes reality on this 9-day safari focused on gorillas and chimpanzees in Uganda.

After your first night, you will head straight to Kibale National Park, the heartland of chimpanzees. Equipped with sturdy hiking boots, you will trek through the lush forest, eventually encountering chimpanzees as they play, feed, and move through the trees. Although this journey highlights unforgettable primate encounters, it does not miss out on Africa’s iconic wildlife. In Queen Elizabeth National Park, you will also encounter giraffes, zebras, the rare shoebill stork, and, of course, the legendary Big Five.

In Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, it’s time for the ultimate highlight of the journey: gorilla trekking. Prepare to hike through dense, breathtaking rainforest as you come face to face with these magnificent gentle giants—an unforgettable encounter that will leave you in awe for a lifetime. Your adventure concludes in Lake Mburo National Park, where you will explore the region’s diverse wildlife, scenic landscapes, and charming local villages. It is the perfect finale to an extraordinary trip.

Important to know: Gorilla trekking is a highly sought-after experience and requires both a licensed guide and a trekking permit. For this reason, it must be planned and booked well in advance and separately. Naturally, we are happy to assist you with all the arrangements.

Is it safe to travel to Uganda?

Uganda is a safe country to visit (yay!). Especially if you want to join organised game drives with private guides, as you will do with us. There are, of course, some places to avoid in big cities like Kampala or Entebbe. But – as with everywhere else in the world – you’ll be fine by taking some precautions. Just some examples to be on the safe side (pun intended): don’t explore the city at night without a driver or guide, keep your valuables close to you, avoid wearing big and visible jewellery and leave some things like passports in the hotel safe.

This is a private and exclusive safari designed to let you travel at your own pace. The journey is tailored specifically to you, exactly according to your preferences. Our experienced travel consultants ensure that every detail aligns with your wishes.

There are many benefits to this personalized experience. To begin with, you will travel in a private safari vehicle accompanied by your own dedicated guide. You have full flexibility to decide when to start your day and when to return, while still benefiting from your guide’s expert advice. Additionally, once inside a national park, you can spend as much time as you wish observing particular animals or herds, without feeling rushed. Finally, with a clear understanding of your interests, your personal guide will offer insightful recommendations, transforming your safari into a truly unforgettable adventure.

At Africa Safari Trips, we focus on designing journeys that are uniquely yours. When you plan your African adventure with us, you’re doing more than booking a holiday—you’re beginning a fully personalized experience. We take the time to understand your ideas and preferences and carefully shape every detail to match your vision. Our team works closely with you to ensure your trip is completely tailored to your expectations. For added ease and inspiration, we also offer a selection of our most popular African tours and safaris as a starting point for customization.

Absolutely—Uganda delivers wildlife encounters beyond expectations. Alongside the iconic Big Five, you’ll have the chance to photograph hyenas, hippos, zebras, the distinctive Ugandan kob, and more than 1,000 bird species in a dazzling array of colors. For primate enthusiasts, Uganda is truly unmatched: its lush forests are home to around 24 monkey species, ranging from nocturnal galagos to striking blue monkeys and the awe-inspiring mountain gorillas.

This once-in-a-lifetime encounter—watching gorillas eat, play, interact, and remain under the watchful protection of the silverback—will leave you in awe and may even bring tears of joy.

Please note that gorilla trekking is conducted in groups of up to eight people, requires sturdy hiking shoes, and typically lasts between two and four hours. As this activity is extremely popular and requires both a permit and a professional guide, it must be booked separately and well in advance.
