Mountain gorillas are full of surprises: they hum and even fart while eating, enjoy cuddling, and are said to be afraid of water, caterpillars, and chameleons. If your main reason for traveling to Uganda is to encounter these powerful yet gentle creatures, this may already sound familiar.

Still, you’re likely to discover new and fascinating behaviors during your one-hour encounter in the lush Bwindi Impenetrable Forest—or even up to four hours if you choose to visit one of the less habituated groups that are still adjusting to human presence. Watch them groom one another, hum softly, and communicate through gentle sounds. You’ll find yourself smiling as they chew on twigs, play, cuddle their young, and display their unique personalities. You might feel like a real-life Tarzan and wish to stay longer—but take note: the dominant silverback can weigh up to 180 kilograms, is six times stronger than a human, and does not welcome strangers. It’s best to keep a respectful distance, savor the moment, and return home with unforgettable memories.
