6 days Uganda: Wildlife safari & Gorilla trekking

A perfect blend of classic safari and gorilla encounters, this short yet relaxing six-day journey showcases the very best of Uganda.

The tour features scenic road trips, remarkable wildlife viewing, a peaceful boat cruise along the vast Kazinga Channel in Queen Elizabeth National Park, and the ultimate highlight—a once-in-a-lifetime meeting with mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. While unforgettable, gorilla trekking is not for the faint-hearted, as it involves a two- to six-hour hike through Bwindi’s lush emerald forest alongside an experienced guide. However, the reward is extraordinary: coming face to face with these powerful yet gentle giants, an experience that will truly take your breath away—figuratively, of course.

Important to know: gorilla trekking is an extremely popular activity (understandably) and requires both a guide and a permit. That’s why it needs to be planned and booked in advance and separately. Of course, we’re happy to help you with that.

Is it safe to travel to Uganda?

Uganda is a safe country to visit (yay!). Especially if you want to join organised game drives with private guides, as you will do with us. There are, of course, some places to avoid in big cities like Kampala or Entebbe. But – as with everywhere else in the world – you’ll be fine by taking some precautions. Just some examples to be on the safe side (pun intended): don’t explore the city at night without a driver or guide, keep your valuables close to you, avoid wearing big and visible jewellery and leave some things like passports in the hotel safe.

This is a private and exclusive safari designed to let you travel at your own pace. The journey is tailored specifically to you, exactly according to your preferences. Our experienced travel consultants ensure that every detail aligns with your wishes.

There are many benefits to this personalized experience. To begin with, you will travel in a private safari vehicle accompanied by your own dedicated guide. You have full flexibility to decide when to start your day and when to return, while still benefiting from your guide’s expert advice. Additionally, once inside a national park, you can spend as much time as you wish observing particular animals or herds, without feeling rushed. Finally, with a clear understanding of your interests, your personal guide will offer insightful recommendations, transforming your safari into a truly unforgettable adventure.

At Africa Safari Trips, we focus on designing journeys that are uniquely yours. When you plan your African adventure with us, you’re doing more than booking a holiday—you’re beginning a fully personalized experience. We take the time to understand your ideas and preferences and carefully shape every detail to match your vision. Our team works closely with you to ensure your trip is completely tailored to your expectations. For added ease and inspiration, we also offer a selection of our most popular African tours and safaris as a starting point for customization.

Absolutely—Uganda delivers wildlife encounters beyond expectations. Alongside the iconic Big Five, you’ll have the chance to photograph hyenas, hippos, zebras, the distinctive Ugandan kob, and more than 1,000 bird species in a dazzling array of colors. For primate enthusiasts, Uganda is truly unmatched: its lush forests are home to around 24 monkey species, ranging from nocturnal galagos to striking blue monkeys and the awe-inspiring mountain gorillas.

Mountain gorilla trekking in Buhoma (northern sector)

Chimpanzee trekking

The Buhoma sector, situated in the northern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, is the largest sector and the birthplace of gorilla trekking in Uganda, dating back to 1993. Trekking in this area is generally less demanding and features some of Africa’s most stunning forest trails, making it ideal for keen hikers. Please note that participants must be at least 15 years old. Treks typically last between 2 and 4 hours, require proper hiking shoes, and are conducted in groups of up to eight people, although gorilla sightings cannot be guaranteed. As gorilla trekking is extremely popular and requires both a permit and a guide, this once-in-a-lifetime experience must be planned well in advance and booked separately.
