Weather in Kenya

Weather in Kenya

Because Kenya lies near the equator, it experiences a tropical climate with alternating wet and dry seasons. Still, weather conditions vary across the country. The coastline is typically hot and humid, while inland regions and higher elevations enjoy more moderate temperatures. Daytime temperatures generally range from 22°C to 31°C, depending on the region and time of year. At night, it cools slightly along the coast (around 18°C in cooler months) and much more in certain inland highland areas, where it can drop to about 10°C.

wet and dry seasons

Kenya experiences both wet and dry periods, with the dry seasons lasting much longer overall. The climate features two rainy seasons—a short one and a long one—as well as two dry seasons, one cooler and one warmer.

The short rainy season takes place in November and usually brings light, occasional showers. The long rainy season occurs in April and May, when showers can be brief or more extended, though it rarely rains all day. Rainfall is more common at night than during the day.

The cooler dry season begins in June, remains mild through September, and gradually warms up again until late October, when the rains return. The warmer dry season spans from December to March, with temperatures rising again in March as the next rainy season approaches.

Safari during the wet season

During the rainy season, the national parks burst with life—lush green forests, vibrant flowers, thriving wildlife thanks to abundant food, and pleasantly mild temperatures. For travellers, it’s also a quieter time to visit, with fewer crowds and reduced rates for safaris and accommodations.

However, there are a few drawbacks. Some lodges close during this period, and certain roads may become difficult to navigate. The good news is that Kenya continues to expand its network of tarmac roads, helping prevent them from turning into muddy tracks. While most roads inside the parks are unpaved, they generally remain passable even in the rain. All national parks stay open throughout the wet season.
